Picked this up a month or so ago and am taking the 4g out of my talon and putting it in the opel. Sick of awd driveline breakage. Plans are: put high compression e98 drinking engine and built turbo 350 trans into the opel. (that is when I get the email from Mr. Hincher when he finishes this run of bellhousing adaptors.) Its gonna be a decent amount of work, but I look forward to it. I'm sure it will steamroll once I get the engine and trans physically mocked into the engine bay. I have a mockup engine and trans ready as I write this. Enough text, here are a few pics.

I was waiting for a while for this crucial piece to the rwd 4g63 puzzle. Thanks to Bill Hincher in Ohio for the bellhousing adaptor. =) In the next few days I will bolt up the mock up engine and trans together and bolt the trans to the existing gm trans crossmember the previous owner used for the gm trans he had used. Then to figure out if a motor plate setup would work better or an engine mount setup would work better. Just guessing the motor plate will work better.

hey Jon, what front end is in the Opel?

The bodies front end is a full one piece fiberglass front end, but I don't know the brand. The suspension is a upper/lower control arm setup that originally had a mono-leaf spring in the front. The owner before me welded in brackets to the front lower control arms and upper part of the front crossmember to use a small diameter coilover instead. Here is a pic of it I took to show a coworker that used to work at a chassis shop. Image

looks like a mid size GM brake caliper/spindle

but it looks like a nice peice for engine fit and ease of service

little bit of progress. got the trans bolted to the crossmember and engine even, level, and centered in the engine bay. running into a few clearance issues. intake manifold hits steering column. have a few ideas for that. bought a 1/2" thick 304 stainless flange to fabricate the turbo header. pretty trick flange. oval on one side to match exhaust port and transitions to round on the other side to easily weld round tube to the other side. here is a few pics.

Did this die, or has it just not been updated? If you are still working on this I'd love to see more! I am about to pick up a pair of these and my first thought was 4G63. A quick search after registration and I was pleased to see someone else with the same thoughts. Sorry in advance for reviving an old thread, but I gotta know!

Not dead. But not much progress. I've been volunteering my time at a local chassis shop and now have it stuck in my head I want to tube the front end and get rid of the factory frame rails. It will give me a lot more room to access and service everything. Doesn't help that I spent a lot of money fully building my dodge neon srt4. Its a disease this car modding thing.

Did you ever straighten out the steering clearance issue ?
I want to do the same swap but if the steering hits , not sure

steering clearance shouldn't be much of an issue for most with the right intake manifold selection. my motor location is set back almost a foot from the factory engine location. i should have the steering clearance I need with a steering shaft heim joint and a few extra steering u-joints and a couple extra feet of steering shaft I bought.

I love those old Opel Asconas id have one myself anyday. The Rekord of the same vintage is of particular sentimental value to me as my Da had one and I did a lot of driving in it. Good luck with your rolling restoration.
