it comes down to expected horse power

horsepower is a direct input to how many lbs per hour you need

a reasonable guidline would be 3/8 in id for 1000 hp so you could go 1/4 in for 500 hp and 1/2 inch for 2000 hp

you can get a lot more involved then that but if you want to spend time on it, look to the fuel rail for improvement because it acts like a resivour too so it needs to deal with the fluctation of the injecters

is 3/8" (-6AN) really big enough for 1000hp? So 1/2" (-8AN) lines are really just a waste then on anything but the wildest 4 cylinders?

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

In the EXCEEDINGLY excessive amount of reading I've done over the last 10 years or so, a common trend seems to be that the lines will be low on the restrictive list relative to other parts such as rail or filter. I must follow this by saying that this is only my findings from reading, I don't have any flow rates for particular parts. There are just soooo many other go-fast bits to look at before lines.
