What is the best tranny option for a 500+hp 4g64 ?

Post by AustinTSI »

I am building a new motor for my 89 Starion. I was planning on going with the wideblock 4g64 option and I have got most of the components including two wideblock 4g64 blocks and I was planning on sticking with the 89 Starion transmission.

But now I have figured out that with what I am putting together that Iwill will easily be hitting 500+ hp. Obviosly the stock tranny can't handle that much power.

My current car is a manual so I don't know if I'm going to stick with a manual, convert it to an automatic, or sell this car and get an automatic.

Which raises the questions (with regard to 500+hp), what is the cheapest most available and reliable transmission option for each of these:

1. MANUAL WIDE block ?
2. AUTOMATIC WIDE block?
3. MANUAL NARROW block?
4. AUTOMATIC NARROW block?

Minor modications of the tranny tunnel would be acceptable but I don't want to be cutting metal out or eliminating the center console on the interior. And I don't want to reposition the hole for the shifter.

Thankx for your input, David.

Highly recommend a fox body Tremec TKO, most base models ones can be had for as little as $800 used and bill makes the adapter now. Best problem free solution.

I am in the same exact boat. Wideblock 4G64 with a fully built motor and 500HP capability. I have been debating on whether to go with an R154 or T56. Either way, I want to stay manual. I was worried about the T56 shifting at 8k, but have been told by others that it performs well and is just about bullet-proof.

I'm really liking the TKO option but I already have 2 4g64 wideblocks and 2 starion 5-speed transmissions. I really didn't want to have to make a change to a narrow block so I contacted Bill Hincher and he has confirmed that he will eventually build a wideblock TKO adaptor. Bill said to send him a friendly reminder every couple of months so he doesn't get distracted and forget about it.

So I'm staying with the wideblock and I'll get the TKO adaptor when it comes out and use my Starion trannys until then.
