4g64 rebuild kits/parts

Post by mellow65 »

i just picked up a mighty max and i'm getting what i'm thinking is maybe some rod noise.

rather then wait for a rod to come through the side of the block, i'm thinking i'm going to try and be proactive and do a rebuild on it, at least the bottom end of things.

nothing fancy, some bearings, a hone and maybe some new rings.

can anyone point me in the right direction for parts. just a simple 4g64 sohc.

it's just been so damn long since i rebuilt anything, what's good, what's crap, dealer only on stuff, or what's good in the aftermarket.

thanks

I have used these guys for everything needed in the rebuild world and they ship before tracking can follow it every time.
This kit has everything you need to rebuild a max except new pistons... which can also be added to the kit.

Search ebay for "93-96 Mitsubishi Pickup 4G64 2.4L Engine Kit MIEK4G64R" it wouldnt let me post the link

Good luck and keep her on the road, theres not manyMax's left

wow, that was way cheaper then i thought it would have been.

even with the full bore everything and a oil pump it's not an arm and a leg.

and yeah, it's seen a hard life. was built new as a rally truck, won the 1995 SCCA national truck champion ship. currently only 14k miles on it. HARD effing miles. but it's got a lot of history.

the funny thing was i owned this once before, sold it, regretted it every min, then i get a call from the guy i sold it to, saying he needed to get rid of it, i couldn't get there fast enough. but he lost a belt, kind of over heated it, lost some oil somewhere.

so i'm going to take some time, because i can't afford to race right now because i'm going to school, go through the motor and freshen things up. it always sounded "rod knocky" when i had it the first time, but i just drove it and kept oil in it. now, it's a little worse. so rather search for a new block when it blows, i'll take this one apart and get my hands dirty. thanks for the info :)

Thats a beautiful truck man, I have ALWAYS loved the Max's and own a 93 Myself, with a WAY more exuberant paint job.
But at this very minute I have the very rebuild kit I refereed you to in my first post but i only plan to use the lower half, I very recently 2 weeks ago blew my hotrod engine up and dropped the stocker lower half with over 160k on it back in with the new head and ECU and electronics, started it up and got Serious smoke coming from the exhaust which was the original plague to the engine in the first place... bad piston rings, bad bad bad piston rings that filled the exhaust manifold and turbo with oil and smoke upon start up, no warming required...lol
But beginning tomorrow morning most likely I will once again remove the engine, which is not hard at all, its like 12 bolts to get out, and rebuild its lower half... new Gaskets, rings, bearings and a good hone job (cause Im broke but need a vehicle) reassemble and back in the truck... I hope to have it running smoke free by thanksgiving at the latest... or I wont be getting Turkey dinner  and that aint happening

Just noticed that it has the 93&up Grille with the 87-92 Steel bumper... Is that a 94 or a 95?

it's a 92, well at least that's what the title says. :D

this thing has been rebuilt many a times. been rolled twice i think. most of the front clip has been replaced.

and it just dawned on me that that kit list for a 93+. is there a difference between different yeared 4g64s?

Nope none, especially not that that particular kit would concern in any way.
A 4g64 is a 4g64 when it comes to the parts that go inside... its the wide/narrow block that changes the transmission choice. You have a wideblock if you have 5 speed manual tranny but even if you just so happened to have a rare narrow block the kits parts ALL still fit properly, theres no difference what so ever

Quick note tho... if its been rebuilt as many times and as extensively as you say you may think about tearing it down before you order anything and verify that you do or dont need standard/oversized/undersized bearings and rings, because i have crossed a few this year that had been redone due to crank walk and stuff in the past so be sure before you buy.

or

just plan on having the crank ground and cylinders bored to specific sizes and order first, but that is most definitely the most expensive way to go, but also the most thorough and best in my opinion.

You could always get yourself a new crank and bypass that part and order standard bearings, then plan to have the cylinders bored out to .050mm over and order the proper bearings and pistons for the job.

No I'm sorry you miss understood me, the WHOLE truck has 14k miles on it. Built brand new as a rally truck, was used for nothing but rally.

Do those guys do over sized pistons and bearings?

But that was my goal to get it all apart and see what I have.

They could... if it was power that they wanted... "There's no replacement for displacement"

Take it apart and go from there.

i'm sure at some point they took it apart. but they ran a production class so they were limited to some strict guidelines. and this was back in the day when Mitsubishi gave money out for contingency, so following them was recommended, but i'm sure all rules weren't meant to be broke. :)
