6G72 V6 GM auto trans adapter

Post by Bill Hincher »

I went out and got a 6G72 engine and cut it up to see what it looked like inside and out
Image
funny? when I was starting out working on cars I always thougt the engine block was a 'dumb' peice of iron, but there is a great deal to learn from cutting away the core and finding out its secrets before a build
Image
The GM auto trans plate overlaps the 6G72 v-6 bolt pattern very nicely. because I can cast my adapters, I am not dictated to by a standard adapter plate thickness size, I can adjust to any thickness I need
Image

I started to think about starter spacing and this will lend itself to the selection of flywheel size

Image
Image
then I turned my attention to the coupler design, the first thing to do was to find all the critical demensions of the exiting crankshaft
Image
I cut up the crankshaft too >;o)
Image
I laid out a couple differnt size flywheels just to see what would interfer or what had a better fitmant so I could make the best choices during the design
Image

Image
In the rough draft, the coupler is a no comprimise peice of hardware, there can be no failure at this piont, any comprimise in this unit will be made elsewhere in the design, the thickness of this unit will dicate the thickness of the adapter plate
Image
I know, it aint a computer drawing, but I spend hours just drawing and erasing and drawing thicknesses, shaving 1mm here and adding an angle there and keeping it strong and keeping it light and trying this and that , just hours of thought and frustration >;o) making a complex peice simple is what I enjoy doing

I have loved this idea since I ran it buy you a while back, looks ike you finally decided to look into it :P How many bolts does the 6g72 crank that you have your hands on have Bill? For some reason, I am thinking the na cranks were 6 bolts and the turbo cranks were 8 bolts. I will have to look into this, I love the idea of a 3.0 or 3.5 swap :)

the guys I sourced the crank and engine from told me that all the blocks and cranks were the same throughout the whole V-6 Mits engine range all 8 bolt cranks

How will that affect the crankshaft adapter being the 8 bolt and the gm being 6?

I cant use the V-8 flexplate because the 6 bolt circle pattern in the center is to large to use with the 8 bolt pattern of the Mits crankshaft, so I had to find blank flex plates with no centers so I could create an 8 bolt pattern on the inner circle of the flex plate, but they were cheap enough that they wont bump the cost much

I never knew that you could get blank flexplates. Are these set up with a chevy starter gear on them?

Btw, how many teeth flexplates are you building this one around Bill?

i will stay with the 153 tooth gear but they do make a 139 tooth wheel, i may use the small one if i can get more ground clearence

While you're at it, incorporate the BOP (Buick,Olds,Pontiac) bolt pattern.

2 0f them are out of business :D

the coupler is built, i just need to get back to the project, fix me up with the BOP bolt pattern numbers if you want it done

inverting is not an option

What is something like this going to translate into cost for the end consumer such as myself?
When I began my build I wanted the 6g twin turbo, but there weren't many choices for adapting to RWD outside using a stock v6 Max trans with dropped off transfer case or whatever, so I went with the same thing I had 4g64, swapped the head and turbo'd it... dont get me wrong I do like it, but it's seemingly just "not enough" and I'd still like to eventually get with the twin turbo v6.

nobody else is building drive line systems for this engine, I create this stuff, its not like I can copy somebody elses work, its all done by me for the first time, so I dont really know whats going to happen when I start

experience has taught me to build 3 types of housings for one engine
the T 5 , the T 56 and the GM auto trans for the American buyers.

I stay within the 450 to 350 dollar mark on all my stuff

Something just struck me, are all of those tranny's auto? I do prefer my manual shift.

Oh, dont get me wrong I realize that you are solely pioneering the engineering and the man hours to help us have some fun toys to play with. I follow a lot if not all of your posts on here because what you do is what I would ultimately love to find myself doing, I have always been a tinkerer and I love the challenges of building something that noone else has.
I appreciate your contributions to the site and the knowledge base, and I hopefully will one day be able to do some business with you, so I can have something truly unique.
Usually when I get into projects personally I call money a tool, and what i want is what I want and if money is the tool needed to get what I want done then I do what is needed, but the price estimate is beyond fair in my eyes.

Once I get back on my feet I will have to contact you about this again.

t5 is a borg warner stick tranny used in fox body mustangs and some comaro's t56 is a 6 spd found in camaro's vipers and mustangs and the gm auto trans is self explanitory.

there was a tredmendous amount of time and attention to detail in the 6G72 V-6 coupler, I will be doing more as I develop the idea
