8v SOHC swap

Post by Israel »

I just bought a 92 MM with the 2.4 SOHC motor. I got a good deal on it because the timing belt broke and ruined the head. My long-term plans are to build up the motor into a 2.4L DOHC turbo motor, but for now, I just want to get it running with a good, used head. From the Engine Look-up Chart, it appears that I have a wideblock, 6 bolt (built in Feb. 02), non-MCA Jet head. My local yard has a 8v head off a 91 2.0L Galant that I believe is also non-MCA. Do you think this head will fit?

Thanks in advance for your time!

i believe that the engine is a non-interference setup. I'll double check my manual when i get home, but if it was just a broken timing belt, then you should be able to just slap a new belt on and be good to go.

I hope that's the case, but I've already thrown a new belt on it and tried starting it. It turns over like it has no compression at all. Of course, it's possible that I may have done the belt wrong, or the previous owner wasn't fully honest about what was wrong with the engine.

Your head probably bent all the exhaust valves.
Another thing is that sometimes the oil pump belt shreds and takes out the timing belt or visa-versa. Was the oil pump drive belt OK?

Braking the belt usually doesn't mess up the head, just the valves..
BUT, just pull a cam tower off to check to see if the cam seized in the head causing the breakage.
How many miles is supposedly on the motor?

The balance shaft belt was fine, just the timing belt broke.

A cam tower? I'm accustomed to DOHC stuff, so I'm not sure what a cam tower is on a SOHC head. I could pull the valve cover off and check for bent valves, I suppose.

The odometer shows 146,000 miles, but it could be on it's second motor for all I know.

Thanks for the help so far, guys!

Sorry mate but you are wrong when you say "bent exhaust valves " all 8 valve single cam 4g motors are not interference motors meaning that there is no danger of bending valves if the cam belt breaks BUT do the same in a twin cam then you will need new valves BEEN THERE DONE THAT WITH BOTH TYPES

92 2.4 is an interference motor It's a 1G.

I have the broken #1 Exhaust Rocker arm to prove it.

and in reference to what it looks like under the valve cover...
