Is my Talons 4G63 a wide or narrow block?

Is my Talons 4G63 a wide or narrow block?

Post by 74runner »

Hey everyone,I'm new here and looking for some info..I'm a DSM fan from way back, owned about 8 Talons. Now I'm into Muscle cars....Long story short I have 90 AWD TSI Talon and a few extra turbo blocks kicking around I looked up what Dodge d50 tranny would fit the 4G63 but lost the info and can't remember if my block would need the wide or narrow tranny bell housing.I'm putting the 4G63 into my 1974 Plymouth Roadrunner and running it RWD.
I found a 89 d50 for parts but I don't know how to tell if it has the rite size bell housing to fit my block.......Thank's for any help.

although it does sound cool, and definatly unique, i dont know how well a 4G63 will work in a 73-74 B body. event with the 4cyl, i bet the car will still be north of 3600lbs- getting kindof heavy for a motor that doesnt make a mountain of torque like a big block would.

just my .02.

I don't think I'll have a problem.
The 318 that came in the car put out 115hp @ 4400rpm and 155torq @2400rpm @ 3616 lb/s

The tsi awd Talon is 195hp and 203 torq(couldn't find rpm range)
at 2700lbs ( stock)

So thats a total difference of 916lbs in weight but don't forget I'm removing the boat anchor 318 and replacing it with a much lighter 4G63

The 4G63 pumps out more hp and torq and only weighs 255lbs compared to the 318 that weighs 500lbs thats a difference of 245lbs if you remove that from the Roadrunners total weight it would be = 3371lbs then minus the Talon's weight of 2700lbs its a difference of 671 lbs....
plus I'm removing the balance shafts and all the Roadrunners interior plus I ditched the stock steal wheels in favor of much lighter aluminum wheels,I'll use the Talons exhaust so that also dumps the heavy dual exhaust so I think I'll get it really close to a stock awd Talon's weight.. oh I won't be using the 727 trans either.I would have to think the d50 trans would be smaller and lighter but I really have not looked it to that yet.

I'm not worried about keeping anything stock in this Roadrunner, I already have a near perfect Roadrunner. This road runner is just the left overs from 3 cars making one nice resto car it will never be a perfect car.I have a ton of Turbo Talon stuff so this project is just for fun and really won't cost me any thing.I'm just looking for helpful info to make the swap a little smoother...What tranny would you use? Is there a heavy(er) duty trans that will bolt up? Thank's guy's :)
Have a look at the car and you will see why I'm not worried :)

The better transmission options require an adapter. I would serious suggest going that way because for $300 extra you can put something in with more parts available and stronger. Look at the Toyota W55/W59 options.

Selecting the right turbo and cam combination will let you shift your powerband around somewhat. A t-25 or 14b on a 2.3 liter stroker engine would be fun! You would have no top end at all but the little 4g would feel like a v8.
