Ideas for front mount thermostat housings

Post by 77amc »

I was 'yarding' again and found a wrecked 95? Miata that had a nice housing that could be adapted to the front of our 4Gxx engines.

And another one from a Hyundia Sonata 2.0..

Lets see if these work..

they don't look that bad to fab on the front of a head for a front exit.

I am not so sure I would trust that piece. I'm sure it's been tried and true tested from Jay but it just looks like a PITA if something were to come loose. What holds the housing in? Is it pressed fit or just the bolt and tab?

I'm going with the Jay Racing kit too. To my understanding it is press fit and that tab/bolt is there to help prevent it from backing out.

Interesting, I wonder how that holds up to the additional weight hanging off of that and how far in the piece goes. I'm sure if it was crap though jay wouldn't sell it.

they have an o-ring and are tight to get in! and if you locktite the bolt that holds it in i cant see it coming loose anytime soon

i have the Jay Racing kit, and ended up having to make a "C" shaped hold down off the bolt hole because the little tab didnt hold it in solidly enough. also, plan on overdriving the waterpump or modifying the fitting to clear the stock water pump pulley as it will not clear.

there are also concerns of coolant going stagnant in the back of the head, which im going to address in a new way:

If you don't mind me asking, why did you run that SS line? Why not go with the block off plate?

EDIT: nvm I missed that last part of your post.

Gentleman Rogue, do you have another picture of the thermostat mounted up, I am just trying to see how much it "hangs" off the motor.

these show how i had the fitting modified to clear the stock waterpump pulley. originally the pipe comes straight out from the head, and now its cocked up to about 2'o'clock. when i take the timing cover back off, i'll get a better pic of the C-shaped hold down i made. i also put a bead of RTV sealant around the flange as added insurance.
