4G64 SOHC 8 valve TO SOHC 16 valve conversion (?)

Post by Yokohama »

I have a 1990 Van with 4G64 wideblock. I understand that certain Eclipse/Galants came with SOHC 16V heads (95-99 GS Spyder)? I also understand that the 4G6x heads will interchange; could I use a 96 GS 16V head on my 8V engine? I think some early 16V heads had a distributor, yes?

Would my van's 8 valve intake manifold bolt into the 16-valve head? What about the 8-valve exhaust manifold?

Assuming the head will bolt on, then what other issues should I be aware of? Will I have to convert to Eclipse EMS (unless there IS a mount for the old distributor on the front of the engine)?

Also, is there really that much gain to be had using the 16V over the 8V assuming nothing else is changed on the engine?

Thank you.

Probably not worth the trouble. I'm sure you could do it, but then you'll be stuck with lackluster aftermarket support.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Please correct me if i'm wrong but IMHO I'm thinking that this swap/mod may not have been done before but the 16 v will breathe far better than any 8v despite it being a single cam You would still be able to have the cam groumd but you will not be able to dial in the cam like a twin cam .If it fits go 4 it :)
PS re manifolds etc just take your gaskets to a parts outlet and compare them & if all the holes match it will fit . It's that easy :)

Yes, I thought it would breath better in stock form than the 8V.

Also, what cars/years would a SOHC 16V 4G64 distributor type head come out of?

I understand that some early/mid 90's SOHC 16V cars have distributors like the 8V. I was told that some Expo/Summits had this type of head, yes?

Thank you.

the 16 valve heads intake and exhaust ports are a diff animal than your ven and the intake for the 16 valve head will hit your floor if you want to make your truck breath better get the turbo set up from a cordia/tredia 1.8/2.0 and bolt it to your 2.4 but then you will have to deal with the heat
