I wonder...(warning bench racing inside!)

Post by boise-nic »

I've not really been around drag racing much but I've seen my friend race their DSM's and they seem to enjoy it a lot. They also cus a lot and kill a lot of ______(insert mechanical part) doing it. I'd be willing to give the truck a try at the 1/4 mile once the weather warms up. I would like to be at least competitive with them. They are constantly wondering why the !@#$ I put a 4g in a truck (no traction). They seem to think it will still be slow(most run a 16g with mods). I know traction is a concern so I now have an limited slip diff and I'll be getting some serious sticky rubber for the back too. Hopefully this will help to mitigate their AWD advantage. Typically they run 12's and 13's. I have absolutely no clue as to what my truck will be able to do but the comments are making me wonder.

Brainstorming, I've made a list of advatages and disadvantages...

Truck->

Advantages...
Light (2600 lbs or so)
Less parasidic drive loss (more power to the ground)
solid axle (wheels stay perp. when it squats on launch)
Sweet shifting transission

Disadvantages...
Higher drag coefficient
Less traction

DSM->

Advantages...
Redline clutch dump 60 foots (good traction)
Better drag coefficient

Disadvantages...
Nasty grinding transmission can add seconds.
Heavy(er)
More drivetrain loss once rolling.

Here's what I will be running in the truck...

ARP headstuds
Big 1G rods, 2g pistons
16g turbo
Large FMIC
Large FM oil cooler
Welded tubular 02 housing to a 3" mandrel exhaust (no cat)
Walbro 255 hp pump
Aeromotive AFPR
750cc injectors
GM-maf - translator
stock 1G throttle body
JM fab tubular intake

W58 toyota mkIII transmission (w/ an awsome billhousing)
Fidanza lightweight flywheel (FWD dsm)
ACT2600 pressure plate

oil pressure gauge
oil temp gauge
Wide band 02
boost
EGT gauge

Other than that its running stock engine management. Haven't thought about what to change to if I get serious and learn how to tune. But I think I have most of my bases covered. I would think I'd be safe making 280-300 hp. I'm not sure what the weak link in the system is.

I know this is highly speculative but I thought it was an interesting thought and it would be fun to pick your guy's brain to see whatcha think. Mod per mod, would a 4g (with a 16g with supporting mods) be quicker / faster in a dsm or a mighty max that was properly set up.

This will all depend on how well the truck hooks up and how you can drive. Get the most weight toward the rear of the truck as possible(relocated battery, fuel cell behind rear axle, etc.)

I am prepping mine for the same thing...

I have a few tried and true things I am doing to maximize my traction and launch ability.

1. You MUST eliminate axle wrap to maintain traction and not break u-joints or worse. So, I am running the low buck option of traction bars snubbed and shimmed correctly.

2. Largest Drag radial / ET street tire you can fit.

3. Launch control installed on my Megasquirt to build boost off line.

4. Flat-shift Mod on Megasquirt for no lift shifting

5. New sport shocks...wish I could afford adjustable ones, but good ones are better than busted ones.

6. PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Between triangulated rear ends and 4 bar drag links I need to do more research. It will be a daily driver so I really would like something that works on the street as well.

Any idea of how wide we can go on the back for tires? Would 265's fit and not have some rediculous offset that would make the stick out to much? I'll have to grab a tape measure and look.

Megasquirt sounds nicer and nicer. I'm only running a 16g so building boost shouldn't be too hard. One advatage of a smaller turbo is the time to re-spool if I do miss a shift. Some of the larger turbos seem like you can count the seconds before boost again.
