4g63 into my Yugo GV
Hello, guys. I am new here. I just started this a couple of days ago and I thought I'd share. I am building this for the Grassroots Motorsports $2010 Challenge and I thought you guys would dig it even though it is not front engine/rear drive; it is just rear drive. I will post a link to photobucket where I am posting my progress pics. Now, the project is a 1988 Yugo GV with a 4G63t in the rear. I have a nice engine (4g63 6 bolt, bottom end has 2G ceramic coated pistons, 1G big rods, balance shafts removed, arp head studs/rod bolts, mitsubishi MLS gasket, head resurfaced, new stem seals, brand new JAM valve springs/titanium retainers, web stage 2 cams, 660 cc injectors, Evo III manifold, scm-61 turbo, ported o2 housing, 2.5" apexi DP that goes to 3 " after the flex section. Cat delete 3" exhaust housing) and am thinking I need to go with an automatic. I have a decent 5-speed, but shifting it would suck. I was thinking with the auto, I could use a shift box (because I am using an SDS standalone EMS) for shifting and eliminate the trans. harness. With a good rebuild and a good converter (higher stall), the automatic should work nicely.
Yesterday, I bought a complete (but not running) 1995 Talon TSi automatic for $150. I may use this 7-bolt set-up to save money for more suspension.
I have started bracing the car. As some of you may know, the Yugo was a subcompact, but the cheapest made sub. I have ever seen. There is not a thick piece of metal on it ANYWHERE! I am basically making a skeleton (probably adding the weight back that I took out with the interior, etc.) to stiffen the car before I cut the back floorpan out to install the engine/trans.
The driver will be positioned in the middle of the car (like a kart), thus giving better weight distribution on the front tires. The front won't have an engine/trans., but will have a battery, fuel cell, and radiator. There won't be an I/C in the front as I am making a ho-made air/water IC that will reside right behind the front seat. Much is still up in the air, but please feel free to give comments................good OR bad, guys. I have never done a project like this, so any constructive criticism will be considered.

BTW, I did score a low-mileage W58 trans. last night with shifter and driveshaft for $86 at Pull-A-Part. It came from an '88 Supra. I think I will save this for a Starlet swap. Do you have a bellhousing in stock, Bill?

Yeah, it has crossed my mind. After I get this swap done, I may put an engine in the front, too. But, for now, I am sticking with my original plan. The short wheelbase/high hp combo will be a handful, but the car is going to be fun for sure.
Also, the Yugo is a different animal; I don't think the 4g63 would be an *easy* fit in the front either. I NEED the traction and FWD cannot offer me that. I have a friend who has a 1.8L Mazda turbo in the front of a Festiva. Huge MPH trap speeds, but still only runs low-13's.

sorry about my late reply, I dont get a chance to look through all the posts anymore,be glad to fix you up with a bellhousing, I am working on the W series right now, I put it on a diet, I am making it lighter and changing it to accept the EVO bolt pattern, will post pic's this week
