4g64 Waterpumps

Post by Mad Menace »

Just so I dont feel like I am the only one who knows and or has this issue, but SOHC wide block and DOHC narrow block waterpumps DO NOT interchange on the 4g64 between the narrow and wide block.

The flanges are too different to even bolt them on, plus the clock of the water outlet is different enough that it hits the oil pump cover, and wouldnt allow for the heater pipe to be installed.

7 bolt DOHC water pump... too small for the Wideblock

Oil pump covers alone can also be kind of tricky to locate the correct one, as I have 3 totally different ones sitting here, 1 SOHC and 2 DOHC and all different. but same part number on the DOHC's.

I took about a dozen good reference pics to contribute to the site regarding this matter AND the modifications that are going to be necessary to be made to the SOHC water pump for the wideblock.

Now if I could just manage to actually post a pic here (since the instructions in the sticky don't work with the re-tar-ted.com server down.

From what I have noticed tho is that it seems that the SOHC waterpump is for the wide block ONLY in this case and the DOHC waterpump is ONLY for the narrow block.

6 bolt water pumps mount the same(wide-narrow) sohc has outlet coming stright out the side(some stuff needs to be modified to fit dohc timing componets), dohc has outlet going to the big water pipe. 7 bolt mounts completly differant. oil pump covers you have sohc, dohc 6 bolt and sohc dohc 7bolt, so 4 differant covers. you need dohc 6 bolt. oil filter adapters are interchangable between wide-narrow-dohc-sohc-fwd-rwd 6 bolts

im pretty sure this is accurate

sorry thought you had a 6 bolt, looks like you have a 7 bolt.

im not sure on 7 bolts

oil pump covers should be 93+ dohc, also 93+ 7 bolt water pump

I have 2, 7 bolt blocks, 1 wide, 1 narrow, they BOTH have the connection in the rear for the heater pipe, the DOHC's is a bigger outlet than the SOHC, like you said you may be correct regarding the 6 bolt but this 7 bolt is a different world I guess.

Also the oil filter adapter may be interchangeable BUT the filter adapter for the DOHC FWD would hit the lower engine bay plate in a mighty max configuration, the filter would hang too low, I personally am going to have to use the OEM one thats already under the hood on the max.

I need a water pump for a 93 Mighty max and an timing belt kit for a 94 Galant GS

Actually... there are 3 different oil pump covers! the 2 pictured in the DOHC swap FAQ (regarded as SOHC and DOHC) but there is a third that I have pictured and it IS different. Timing components mounts in different places/raised in opposite locations. (I will post the pics of all 3 as soon as I figure out how to get pics posted)

So in conclusion then DOHC and SOHC, 6 bolt and 7 bolt blocks have different water pumps, and you need the specific pump for the BLOCK not necessarily the application`
