Mighty Max #847 F/BMMP

Post by lsr mike »

Here's my Mighty Max I race at Maxton, NC and Bonneville Salt Flats, Wendover Utah.

The Records I hold with the ECTA are in "F" motor (2.0-3.0L) Production Mini-Pickup, 119.219 MPH

and F Blown Modified Mini-Pickup, 136.005MPH with a slipping clutch.

I'm currently fixing that.

It's not really a Engine Swap it's more adapting Eclipse stuff to work with the truck and a lot of custom Fab stuff, just not much performance stuff for 4G64 SOHC, as you may well know.

Here's the Pix

In the beginning

The head, ports enlarged bowl's re-worked

Customized Intake tank

Runners cut out of the intake

Nice little 10:1 Piston, top and side coated

AEM ECU installed (talk about creative wiring, I could write a book)

Image

A lot going on here. Eclipse Dual Coil, Igniter, and Eclipse Throttlebody Installed. Dictated by the AEM ECU... wiring a bit askew

Image

The Turbo and Custom Exhaust Manifold in the works

All installed.....

see the thread in Mechanical Swap regarding the Clutch replacement in progress. Stock clutches don't hold 14lbs of boost.

This is by no means everything, Just the highlights.

You might look into some 1.5L Mitsu parts for the turbo system. I know someone makes a turbo kit for the 1.5L Mirage and that may work for your application or at least give you some ideas.

How much air does that SOHC flow and what kind of work have you done to it? Isn't there a 16v SOHC head out there as well? I'm sure that's probably outside the rules, but since it's still SOHC, you might be able to squeak through and move some more air.

uh... the turbo is complete with intercooler, wastegate and all attendant accessories....

There are 16V heads, I've got a lot already tied up in this 8vALVE head with the porting and bowls, oversize valves and strong valvesprings. This engine turns 8000RPM

Well Guys,
Speedweek 09 is over, My Mitsubishi Mighty Max is now the Class Record Holder for a 2.0-3.0L Blown Modified Mini-Pickup at 137.400MPH.

Why so Slow they say.... My first run I aborted after the 2 mile mark at 141.799 MPH because my Lower Radiator hose came off. Self inflicted wound, The clamp was never tightened. But It still qualifed me for a return run to get the 2 way average and set the record. Off to impound for the night.

Up at 4:30 the next morning to ready the car for the return, those runs are made at first light before the regular qualifying begins. I make my return run, pulling hard in 5th gearin the 2 mile( out of 3) and bang! no more 5th gear!, pull it back down to 4th and wind it out to 7200RPM. for a 133.001 MPH run. averaged together, New record at 137.400 MPH.

back in the Pits I discover there isn't 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th or reverse. You Transmission guys know what that means, stripped the teeth of the input shaft gear. Confirmed by the long flat thin metal pieces in the tranny drain oil. No exchange Tranny's in Salt Lake City, no parts for a Rebuild, bummer... on the trailer with a soft record. 1,800 miles back to Ohio

So the next weakest link is found, driveshaft, rear gears and axleshafts are the next candidate's for breakage... Motor has a monster midrange pull, I almost got sideways in 3rd on the second run, salt is a little slippery, got to watch the power application.
