d50 tranny?

Post by Jwbrocloud »

I bought a 4g63 pre-swapped quest a few weeks ago. The clutch is going bad in it. The guy I bought the car from said it has the d50 tranny in it. I need to buy a clutch for it asap. I think i'ma just go with a stock clutch though because I don't know if I am going to end up swapping out this tranny or what. Yall mentioned a bill housing would probably do me good in the long run but I am worried about the internals of this thing holding up . . . Has anyone run the d50 tranny here in a swap at about 350 horses? What should I do? Obviously put a clutch in it for now, but what next after that?

Most people I've talked to agree that the breaking point is around 300-350hp for the d50/mm tranny. It might not be as clear cut as that though. A lot of tranny breakage happens as a result of launching hard with excessive backlash in the drivetrain. It's more of the impact loading that breaks it than a constant transfer of torque when your actually underway. But with enough power, you can break that tranny about anyway you want :)

you will need the D50 trans' clutch disc with a regular DSM pressure plate, if you didnt know already.

So d50 disc, with dsm pressure plate, and so that would mean a dsm flywheel too? Someone I talked to also mention something about using the pre 1987 starion flywheel. But from what it looks like I will have to swap out the tranny once I wanna be at the 400 hp mark . . . Either that or go and pick up about 2 extra D50 trannys. But then there is the decision of which is cheaper in the long run, doing the r154 or w55 swap or just keep spending a 100 bucks or so on D50's???

I 'thought' that someone on here had a drift truck with around 400hp and what was basically a stock d50 tranny. Even with 'only' 300 hp, your truck weighs next to nothing and your power to weight would still be insane. Just think...a might max / d50 with 300 hp = a dsm (or other 3300lb car) with 450 hp. Thats good enough for me.

yeah, use the stock FWD 4G63 flywheel. AWD will not fit.

Does the fwd 4g63 flywheel have a pilot bearing for the d50 trans? Or can it be machined for one?

It needs to be machined out for the d50 pilot bearing.
