91 awd talon found

Post by 77amc »

Hey, I found a 91 talon that's an auto, looks straight (white/tan) and the prev owner was a mech at a Mitsu dealership, and the 'brother' said "It's got all the goodies" on it. Cams, eprom, injectors, larger turbo(?) yadda yadda.. with a core turbo motor in back.. 900 but its' bee sittin for 2.5yrs (might come down)
What should I look for that is Mitsu specific??

Call be on everything- start with the turbo. It takes 2 seconds to pop the intake off- and if its not a stagger 6 blade (16g) then you can call BS on everything else. Offer 300$-

Profit.

Coltboostin: "call be on everything"??? What does that mean?
Staggered 6 blade.. is that where there is 6 predominant and then another set just under those?

What would the car be worth running and reliable? 1800-2400-??
Are the auto trans fragile or not? I've seen a couple on U-tube that are autos running in the low 11's (probably a 3-4000$ trans build up)

Does it matter to the Eprom ECU if it's an auto car or not?
I know on Hondas that I've messed with, that T/B, dizzy, some other stuff had to be dedicated to either auto or manual.
.. I guess it would, considering the shift points and T/B position.

Sorry for all the q's but I'm still trying to learn me more on these cars..
Heck, it took 30yrs for the Ol honda stuff.

Thanks. Errol

Coltboostin means call "BS" on everything. Check the turbo like he said. If it's not at least a 16g (staggered blades) then the rest is BS. There's no point in putting even injectors on a DSM without upgrading the turbo first. (a 14b would be an upgrade for the auto car, but not much) The simplest upgrade would be an exhaust and would tell you if they had performance in mind.

Ask why it's been sitting for 2.5 years. Likely that core motor is for a blown unit in the car. Pull the timing cover and look for a worn or broken timing belt. If everything checks out, then $900 isn't bad for a good shell.

The ECU can be checked fairly quickly to see if it is an EPROM or has an aftermarket chip in it. The auto trans is nothing to worry about. The ECU simply has a more conservative tune in auto form since it came with a smaller turbo. There is no evidence that I know of that the auto trans is weak, but there are upgrades for it.

If you're looking for a project or parts car, then this might work for you. If you're looking for a running working car, then walk away. Right now, good, stock 1991 AWD might run you $2500 on the high side. A decent running car would likely be $1500. Most are in poor shape due to age and abuse and are only good for parts if that.
Do it in a Datsun!

He covered it.

Google 16g's- look at what that compressor looks like vs a 13b (stock auto) and 14b (stock 5 speed). Thats the easiest thing to check on that long parts list.

He's suposedly sending some pics later this week. His add only showed two.
Thanks Jeff and coltboostin for the advice..
Isn't the ecu in the middle, under the console? Or did they move it to the side kick pannel?
I just wonder how much he will let me look at once there. I'd like to see a fresh head (cleaner) and if he'll let me pull the cover off to look for aftermarket cams.
He said his brother had moved to Florida a while back and the way he talked about it, i don't think he's interested in fixing it himself..
He stated that it's been sitting about a 1-1 1/2yrs but who knows, I'm thinking more. I'll know more on how much the tires are sunk in the dirt and any amount of red wasp nests are in it. (that supra that i looked at last week for the w55, had a 3-4' king snake coiled up over the spark plugs. just finished molting) That was fun to see just opening up the hood and it's within striking distance..

Anywho, I'll try and call him again tonight and talk. Maybe get brothers # and ask him what all has been done..
