making a d50 trans shift better
hey guys
im finally out racing my car and have noticed the d50 trans is a bit of a pig to shift, and im losing time cos of it
any thing out there i can do to help reduce my shifting times
can we make or gear sticks into short shifters etc?

ive just been down playing round with my gearstick and working out what im going to do
at the moment the throw is roughly 100mm stock for a 3-4 shift
now looking at things i think im going to go with a spacer which is basically just a copy of this plate here

and as far as adding length between the pivot and the ball i was goin to cut it where i have put the red line through it, or does this bit need to stay the same distance from the ball?

i thought maybe it clicks the "gate" when you go to 5th, cutting below it would just make it easier to weld
any suggestions on how much i should be adding?was thinking 25-30mm
and should i take that much off the top aswell?

i got started today
made up a spacer plate one inch thick and then cut my shifter just above that sqaure peice as i think it is for the gate
i made up an insert also an inch long with spigoted ends and then drilled 1/4 inch holes into the two ends of the stick, this should give it heaps more stregth when i get it welded twomorrow rather than just have two flat ends

i chucked it in my car loosely and it seems to have reduced the shifting distance down to around 70mm from around 100mm stock
will measure it better when i install it fully
still tossing over wether or not to cut the top shaft down aswell any one have any opinions on this good or bad?

cheers guys put it all in 2nite and it works well
extentuates my shifting problem tho but im now sure its a selector issue with the gearbox, which allows me to push to far to the left so can miss the gate for 2nd and 1st
nah wont be making any to sell, plus im all the way over the otherside of the world

you know how there is two pieces, one sits inside the other with a taper.
you shave the back off the outter one so that the taper's hit each other and not the flat faces at the edge.
dont shave a lot, just enough to get the job done.
he spoke to mechanics first and other knowledgeable sources, nobody else had heard of it being done but nobody could tell him it would be a bad thing either. this was 12months ago and its still running fine.
