Hi all,

My name is Gabe and I am just starting to toy around with the idea of building up one of my Conquests. I picked up 2 1987 Conquests this past summer for $400. One had gotten into a decent accident and the other is a clean rolling chassis. The one that got totaled had a very new engine in it with TopEnd components and ran very well from what the guy told me. I could just swap the motor into the good car, but I have been toying around the idea of a 4G6X swap...

As it sits, I have a 6 bolt longblock 4G63 sitting in my shed. I also have a locally available Toyota W58 tranny in good condition for $100. I have read a little bit about this and that the swap is feasible, but not much on details or how difficult it is.

I have also read about the 4G64 wide block and how it is a direct bolt up to our starquest trannies, which seems promising. It is also more displacement and a very rare and sought after motor in the DSM community I guess. Problem is, I don't have one and know very little about what works with that combo.

So, what would you guys do and what might be the best option for me, both cost and time effective. I want around 300-400 hp with good reliability. I have access to a welder, tools, garage, and some machining capabilties. Any info or advice would be great, specifically regarding the W58 + 4G63 swap.

Thanks!

if i was going to do a 4g swap into a starion i would definitely put a powerglide/th-350 behind it. it will be the last tranny you will ever need. the entry price is a little steep. ($1525 for the convertor, flexplate and tranny adaptor alone) but like i said it will be the last. the 2.4 will spool a 60-1 turbo up by 3200-3500 rpm and make 500 horses reliably. together with suspension mods you would have a 10 sec daily driver at full weight. lighten it up and stiffen the chassis you may go the way of 9s.

Transmissions really depend on the application though.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

So, I have decided to go with the toyota W58 tranny with the 4G63. Anyone have any info on modifying the bellhousing that is documented in general form on one of the swap websites?

I know I said this was the place to come for info... but there really isnt any on that... nor will you find much out there that you havent already found. The W58 is a hack job by most accounts. I'd really say.. hey.. this is a step by step way to do it... but i cant... or I would have done it by now.

That said... its either a crude DIY job.. or you can call any hotrod shops in your area to talk to about it. Puerto Rican guys are the guys to look out for.. they can do ANYTHING you want. Those guys are incredible.

Dont plan on any bolt together kits or adapter plates though. Its going to be a matter of welding half a bellhousing onto another half. That is how the JD guy did his... which is the one that made its way to RotoZuk. He said it was crap and got the guy to send him another one. That's all I know about that tranny on this car... somehow everybody thinks its THE way to go... :-/ please tell me why (other than the fact that the W58 is a good tranny for cheap).

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately it seems like I am stuck with the narrow 4G63 and the W58 tranny (which I got for $100) so I'll have to make them work. My Grandfather works at a machine shop, so hopefully I can get something going. I'll keep you guys posted. Does anyone happen to have the link to that guy's site who did the W58 tranny swap? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
