I recently acquired a 88 Conquest TSi as a project. The 2.6L in it runs OK, it's just that I know nothing about these engines. I'm a lot more familiar with the 4G family of engines so I'm thinking about swapping in a motor. I found a 90 Mighty Max pickup out at a local yard yesterday that had a 4G64 in it. Is this the sought after "wideblock" motor that the StarQuest tranny bolts right up to? If it is, I'm snagging the damn thing ASAP. I suppose the only real way to be for certain is to yank the block, and match up the parts. is there anything on the block that would verify it's the right block short of pulling it and trying to stab a Starquest tranny on it?

What year is it? What transmission?

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Check that it is fuel injected. If it is a 90-92.5 then it is probably a 6 bolt 4G64 unless someone swapped engines.

It's a 90. It has a 5 speed in it, but the head is off the engine along with the front cover. Data plate on the firewall says 4G64.

Yeah, it's a 4G64, and it should be a 6 bolt.

Like before, as long as someone hasn't done some stupid swap, it will.
