I ned help Engine convo of Sohc 83 Mitsi Starion 2 Dohc VR4

Post by phornixbryan »

hey guys

I am from down under NEW ZEALAND and I got a 1983 Mitsubishi Starion as yall call them FLAT Body(NON FLARED GUARD WITH A SOHC 2.0L ENGINE AND NON LSD) one's an I have decided to put a 1990 VR4/Evo 0 engine into my car and i have basically hit the wall an i have been told that you guys on this forum are practically guru's when it come to this sort of stuff.

My problem is can i or can i not just use my gearbox for the vr4 engine?
I have been told a lot of different options when i have asked about what gearbox to use.

a) use a w55 gearbox out of a supra
b) use a rx7 series 5 gearbox with a b2600 bellhousing
c) my factory gearbox should just be able to just slide right in!!!!

Please I would greatly appreciate any help and advise i could possible get

Cheer,Bryan

Bryan,

From I understand, you have a regular "narrow" bell housing pattern, so you tranny should bould right up! But is should be easy enough to check ;).

oh ok so what your saying is that only the 4G54(2.6L)the ones that came out in America have to fuck around with their tranny's to fit a 4G63 dohc vr4 engine into their starions!!!!SWEAT!!!!! this should make stuff a lot easier an less costly hahahahaha!

But i think i might need to use my flywheel an clutch as i check to see if my gearbox would fit into the rear end of the vr4 engine an the shaft is a bit to big but then again i didn't remove the vr4 clutch pressure plate, do u reckon that might be why the shaft of my gearbox seamed to big???

the engines at my mate house I will try and get some pictures but yeah the shafts about 13mm or so off do reckon if swap flywheels around like used my one from the sohc engine on the dohc engine would that work, like bolt up and stuff?? as they are still both narrow blocks right please excuse me i am still a bit off a nube haha

I'm pretty sure the 2.0 Starions were all wideblocks. Not sure where you guys are hearing otherwise.

I think your best bet is to swap heads and pistons and freshen up your bottom end with new rings, bearings, gaskets and paint.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

fuk!!!!! u serious man so basically a full rebuilt in other words? are u show this is what i would have to do? like can't I use a b2600 bellhousing on a rx7 series 5 gearbox or a w55 supra gearbox as i have even read on austarion forums that this guy just used a l200 gearbox here is a link

http://forums.austarion.com/viewtopic.p ... hlight=vr4

and i know there really ain't no difference between a l200 an starion gearbox

gearbox

Post by AllanL »

the l200 and starion gearboxes have the bigger bellhousings

the vr4/evo blocks won't match

best bet is a rebuild or use the dohc head on the sohc block

uk's lancer register might be of help too...

cheers

thats my lancer :D

i thought we had all got over this wideblock narrow block confusion
AllanL you have posted incorrect info which ads to the confusion l200s are narrow block gboxes

Your 2l starion motor is wideblock

The vr4 motor is narrow block

so as dj suggested you can either keep your gbox and do a half/half engine build with a starion block and vr4 head
this will also allow you to use the b2600 bellhousing on the rx7 gearbox

or use the whole vr4 engine and use a sigma 2l nonturbo gearbox, these are identical to the l200 gearbox (yanks call them d50s) except the shifter will be in the right place for the starion hole (i used the l200 box as it has the shorter extension housing meaning i didnt have to cut my shifter hole)
or you can use one of the various other billhousings avalible for them

heres a pic from djs gbox info page it shows the difference between the l200 shifter position and the starion, this is the same difference between the l200 and sigma gearbox

hey soljah are u sure that the l200 gearbox will handle to powder of the vr4 engine doe?

If it can well that will be choice as my bro just put a l200 4g63 carb engine into his 73 gto and now the fucker wants to swap with my factory turbo engiine but that will be algood because I can use his gearbox now!hahaha

And no sorry mate I am from Auckland not Ashburton

Can you tell me more about your cars progress please

cheers

That information was quite old  Back in the mid 90's I talked to a DSMer from Australia (on Talon Digest) about 2.0L Starions. We both thought that such tranny would work for RWD conversion.

We even discussed sending such tranny to US... It is a good thing we didn't go through with that plan ;).

Yep, I got my first DSM (90 GSX) back in '91. Like I said, it was a very old information ;). Long before I even heard about "wide and narrow" blocks!
