Did you find the cause for water in the cylinders?
It could have been a head gasket issue, cracked head, etc. The block may clean up. Carbon buildup on top of the pistons is pretty common, epsecially on a stock motor that wasn't "maintained" that well. Even a maintained motor with some miles on it ...

1971 Datsun 521 (swap and progress pics)
So I've had this Datsun for about a year and a half, it's got the stock 1.6 liter engine. It's pretty slow. I came across this engine for a decent price. I was told its a 4g64 dohc but I'm not sure, if anyone could reconize if it's a 4g63 or 4g64 I would appreciate it,
