1974 Dodge Colt - 4G63T Project

I have a 1974 dodge Colt rally car that I bought 3 years ago. It was built into SCCA rally use in 1987, and is somewhat of an anomoly in that it has a conundrum of parts on it.
The current powerplant (in pieces - again !) is a 4G54 that was destroked using a crank from a 4G52. Using Mahle aircooled VW pistons, they zero decked in the block nicely. The head was mildly ported and it breathed through a set of downdraft 48mm Webers sitting on a custom manifold.
The transmission is the KM132 which as you guys know, doesn't handle torque to well (At least the ones I've had didn't).
The car has been sitting since 2006, waiting for me to get around to it.
It's been very unreliable since I've owned it (but beating the crap out of it on stage rallies probably doesn't help.
I'm looking to swap a relaible engine making 280 or so HP and lbs. of torque, linked to a reliable and strong transmission. (I posted in the bell housing thread and it sounds like the W55 is a good bet).
My mechanical knowledge is not great but I'm learing. My friend is a millwright and he'll do what ever fabbing he can. I basically need advice and help with the project, and this forum seems helpful without the drama and bullshit of other forums.
I'm concerned about clearance issues :
The car has a Saab sterring rack mounted on the back of the cross member. There's been a fair bit of fabbing on the front end, which could cause clearance problems.
I'll try and post some pics (I hope this works) :

Any help you guys can provide as far as clearance issues before I get to far into it would be great. If you need more pics or measurements then just let me know and I'll post em.
Thanks !
