wassup guys. i have a 90 mighty max with the 5 speed manual and rwd. its sitting 5 inches lower in the back and 3 inches lower in the front on 17 inch acura tl rims. this is a trade for my shit box 1992 mazda miata.

i need to know some basics first so please help me out here. ive searched for a couple things and this is what ive found

- stock mighty max tranny fits a 6 bolt 4g63 motor. motor bolts into truck bay.

- explorer rearend bolts in no problem ive heard.

- firewall must be cut for the cas and the thermostat housing.

-going from 80hp to 220hp is a 140hp difference


now heres what i havent found yet

- after all is said and done as far as the engine being installed, will the max speedo work? if not ill make my own in dash setup as planned instead of adding gauges.

- which throttle cable should be used? mighty max, 4g63, or other?

- where can i find suspension bits for the max?

- which clutch/flywheel combo will work in the max tranny?

- do you absolutely have to have a custom intake manifold or can you possibly work with some piping and more cutting of the firewall in order to fit the intercooler piping? or could somebody point me in the direction of customizing the 4g63 intake manifold so that it will work?

- im welll rounded in electronics so extending/shortening a harness is no big issue. but can anything from the max harness be saved and used?


im on a budget and im a full time automotive student at Ben Franklin tech in Boston. i really want this swap done so i can sell it and get another project. (next project may be 5 speed turbocharged lexus ls400) i figure i came to the right spot and i hope some of you guys who have done the swap before can shed some light on my situation and point me in the right direction.

ive been all over the internet finding information here and there, piecing together what i think is the easiest and cheapest turbo engine swap. thats why i jumped on the offer to get my mighty max.

i just wish i could find all the information in one build thread (i wouldnt even need to be on a forum) which i plan on doing. i will cover everything i buy/swap/customize so that it will be in one place for everyone.


i dont want to waste any money that i can barely even come up with atm so please help me out

which clutch/flywheel combo will work in the max tranny?

where can i find suspension bits for the max?
i actually called around, for performance(handling) there were really only a couple choices. just google.
Energy Supsension makes a swaybar bushing kit. Toxic shock struts etc. Honestly depending on what your really after Ligo or one of the other drag guys might give you some pointers on the straight line aspect. They obviously know whats working there.

which throttle cable should be used? mighty max, 4g63, or other
mechanically if they are both just steel cable, you can use a splicer if they are not long enough. i've havent done the swap yet, but if the motor is in and ready to start, im sure you have enough know-how to work this part out.

you are not going to get around the intake manifold mods there are tons of pics on this site showing how to mod them. again pretty simple in the grand scheme of things.

no sense in throwing it away till after that has started. im sitting on 2 92 harnesses and my stock truck one till after this thing is on the road for a while but from what i've gathered get the 91-94 harness off a turbo 1g and you should be ok. if thinks get too bad you can do what i plan to do, and hang myself with the stock harness in the garage. gogo carradine!

my swap will start soon enough and im in the same boat. just bought a house 4 months ago, and getting married in 12 months.... another month and my garage will be workable again, then ill drive my coupe for a bit while i tear the truck down. gl man there is tons of info here if you spend the time reading. check out jeremy's truck its really nice and done very clean. there was another guy from texas, who worked at a turbo wholesaler, whos truck was very very nice, although done on a different budget than jeremy's. Ligo's is prolly one of the fastest i imagine, but hes running a hybrid engine (whole other monster there)

becareful building a car to sell. if you cant wield,wire,and do 100% of the work yourself, there is almost no way to make money flipping lower end project car. classic cars are different, but selling these, i wonder if anyone has even really broke even. you have to want to build one of these for the pleasure of doing it, and the look on people's faces at the track.

I figured I would see your truck show up here. Somebody from our local DSM site was destined to end up with that truck. (If you decide to sell it again before doing this swap, let me know ) I am happy to help with any info you are missing, but I think the two BEST pieces of advice I can give are:

1) Don't cut the firewall, because you will regret it.
2) Don't build it to sell, because you will lose money.

If you want a different car, why not just sell the truck as it is and buy what you really want? I would think if you play your cards right, you could get what you really want without a whole lot more than what you have.
