Well, it could be going a little faster. Haven't done much on it lately but I think I can get a few more things done this week. After trial fitting the turbo with the manifold in place it looks like I may have to abandon the Holset. It will fit with the compressor facing the firewall... I don't know, a 16 g is looking better and better if I can find one.

I found a 16G last night and bought it. Anyone interested in the Holset PM me an offer.

Well, that 16g deal fell through. I bought it on Fleabay for $270 with shipping. It was listed as a new TD05H turbo but the picture showed it was a 01470 Evo 3. Guy claims UPS lost it and refunded my money(probably found out what it was really worth).
I have the power windows modded to work without the body control module and also have the spoiler working in the same manner. I had to gut the sensor based switches and put new mechanical switches/contacts inside their housings to make them work. I rerouted the starter wires to the drivers side, ordered a starter and starter gear from Jegs. I also ordered the newer 3mm lash adjusters and found a lower timing cover for $30.

If the 16g is what your gonna go with you will be happy with it. I ran one on my 1g awd and man I could slide corners like a pro drifter lol. People who didnt know about dsm really didnt believe I had only 4 cyl under the hood. They come on fast at about 2500 and hold through till about 7300 on a stock engine with evo 9 injectors and front mount.
Although if you do buy one try to get the big16 evo 3 turbo. I have had all of them and it is the best option. I think if you look around new they areny much over 5-600. Worth every penny though.
Love the car and where its headed keep it up!!!

I ended up buying a 16g turbo and manifold off a 2004 Evo. I am crossing my fingers that this one gets delivered. I am still debating wether to get a air to air or air to water intercooler. Either way I am also going to be using water/meth injection too.

Your gonna like that one too. Even the stock evos are bad! I was thinking on that one before I got my 20g. with all the stuff I am doing it was hard for me to go smaller than the 20. especially as how I want to eventually go to a ball bearing gt35 of some sort or another. Its really to bad you dont have enough room for a stock manifold and larger turbo. You could always do something like the member on here with the 7 and build a manifold out the front, but you will like the evo 16. cant wait to see some vids of it running

The Evo 3 manifold does fit and I could probably fit most aftermarket turbos. I have about ten inches between the block and fender well. I just choose the Evo 16 because there are a lot of low mileage take offs on the market. The Holset I have wouldn't fit because the hot side is enormous. I think its about 9+ inches in diameter. I think the Evo 16g will be great for the street. My goal is to get it running in the next two weeks.

OMG. Maybe I won't be looking for a Holeset..
I'd probably have to put more air in that front r-tire
I can't wait til you give a vid of it (to us first!)

So, the Evo three manifold with an adapter for the twin scroll Evo 8 will not work. It's too close/interferes with the block. I think the solution is to buy a tubular evo manifold. Cut the head flange off, add about two inches of pipe and weld the flange back on. This should put the turbo up front and clear the block. If this works out it will be a good low buck turbo for all who are doing RWD swaps.

by jeffball610
The turbo might be low buck, but the process isn't. There should be plenty of T3/T4 solutions that would be much cheaper even with the added cost of a manifold. The EVOIII 16g should fit up just fine with the only issue being the compressor outlet. EVO 8-9 turbos and manifolds should also work well, but I believe there is a clearance issue with the water pipe. Most of us running RWD setups shouldn't have an issue with that. Most of the turbos meant for direct swaps into DSMs should work fine in a RWD car. The issues come in when you have tight shock tower or fender clearance. The DSM turbos "tuck" into the block, and in RWD form, will stick out away from the block.
If you really want to use an EVO 8-9 turbo, the use an EVO 8-9 manifold. You can buy a cheap tubular unit from Megan racing, or eBay. Watch for cracking, but it should work fine.

Evo 8 manifold won't work because the compressor housing hits the balance shaft area of the block. It's 100% engine block interference. I'll post some pics Monday. I did buy a tubular Evo 8 manifold that I will modify to work for cheap.

Some of the guys running the oem evo8/9 turbo/manifold combo have used a spacer flange between the head and manifold.

I need a spacer that is about 1 and a half to two inches for it to fit. Have you seen any pics of this? I imagine I would need two flanges with pipe welded between them.

Last couple of days I rebuilt a toyota starter and put the chevy gear on it. I used the tool I made to remove the valves to put the snap ring back on the starter, worked perfectly. I have the water pump and timing components all installed. I finished the transmission mount today and got it all bolted up just before dark. There is a lot more room between the head and firewall now. Well, back to work for three days then I'm hoping to get my driveshaft assembled and balanced.

OK, I just found a thread with the evo 8 manifold on a Mighty Max using two flanges as spacers and longer studs. I'm going to order them and see if i can find some longer studs. I wonder if I should drill and retap to M10's???

I have new pics to post but apparently photobucket is screwed up right now. I have my drive shaft back from the machine shop. I have all my coolant lines and trans cooler lines on. Tomorrow I should finish my wiring if I can find a resistor pack for the injectors.

This is so cool I would never expect it to have that setup if I saw it on the street. Please keep us posted. Will you be making the trip to Ohio for the DSM Shootout? Please say yes I would love to see this thing in person.

on the topic of the water pump, I personally went with a jay racing set up over the welding option so that I wouldn't have to modify every water pump that went on the car. Most engines do outlive their water pumps and if mine decides to go during a race weekend I have the option of picking up something from kragen or whatever and slapping it on.

I ended up putting a mighty max pump on. It limited my intake routing options but like you said, if it goes out I can buy a replacement anywhere.
When I'm done I'll update this thread, some of the parts and plans I have had have changed throughout the build.

Sure, I'm still in Huntsville. I am going to try and wrap up the last few things on my checklist tomorrow and I should crank it Wednesday.

It's a 2" to 2.5" 45 degree. It connects the charge pipe from the turbo to the intercooler piping. It's an odd one I ordered that should have been in the mail today.

Ran into another problem. I tested the fuel system and had a leaking injector o-ring. Got a set and pulled the injectors. One of the pintle caps was cracked and would not stay on. I read several different post, some say its ok to run without them, some say otherwise. At this point I'd rather wait on the $3 cap than chance any problems. To be continued...

I cranked it for the first time today! Not nearly as loud as I thought it would be with an open header. I have some small issues to work out but I'll have a video up soon.

It's been a while since I posted anything new. Finally had some time to work on the car. I had to fix some small problems(oil leak, trans fluid leak). I took some time to clean up the wiring and paint a few things too. I am missing my LM-A cable so I haven't been able to data-log rpm. I hate the thought of buying another one. If it doesn't turn up soon I may have to.I built a three inch mandrel bend exhaust to a Moroso Spiral Flow muffler that turns down just before the rear diff. I'm working the next ten days straight so it will be a while before I post anything else.

This Thursday I will be working on this project again. It's just been sitting in the garage for a while. The only thing that I have done related to the Crossfire is rebuild an Eaton Gen3 M90 supercharger. I have a really simple plan for a manifold for the twin charger setup that I will document here. Oh yeah, did I mention I am going to venture into the world of twin charging??? Going to run the supercharger at 1.2:1 ratio with an underdrive pulley. That should get the turbo spooled up ~2krpm. Megasquirt will be getting installed right after Christmas. I hope some of you guys that have gone the Megasquirt route will be able to help me out. I have also decided to finally gut this car out and see what kind of weight I can remove. It will still be streetable. My goal is to drive it to the DSM Shootout next year.

I'm parting the engine and trans/adapter out. I may even sell the Crossfire as a roller. If there is no interest I will probably put a Ford 5.0 or 5.8 in it. The car was a blast on the highway but in town it really sucked. It would have been better with a manual transmission or higher stall converter.
Posted: Wed Aug 29, 2012 12:30 am
by kuroi
If I may ask what sucked about it? I can see how your charge piping setup could make your spool and drivability suuuuck.
Posted: Wed Aug 29, 2012 9:39 pm
by CaughtintheCrossfire
Turbo lag in first gear sucked. It would spool at 2500 rpm, but 2500 rpm wouldn't come until about 25mph. It could have been solved with a better/higher stall torque converter.
