v6 4x4 5spd trans - convert to 2wd?

i hear all v6 5spd's were 4x4 but i was wondering if you could use the 2wd extension housing (tail housing) in place of the piece that mates to the transfer case.

i know this is primarily a 4 banger forum, but it is perhaps the best mitsu rwd site around and this would be a really neat alternative to turbo swaps. keep my 87 ram 50 a 2wd 5spd truck but be able to run a montero 3.8 with 87 octane friendly 250hp/250tq and a v6 would be a natural for dual exhaust!
