Is there any difference in length between the R154 and the W55/58 transmission?
I have a W58 from a '85 celica with the 22r 4 cylinder motor and right next to it a '90 supra with the r154 trans, just looking at them it looked almost identical as far as length goes but have yet to verify it.

As far as I know, they are pretty close in size. I'm sure Bill will chime in when he has time since he should have both sitting in front of him somewhere in his shop. If you have the choice between the two, take the R154. Even if there is a marginal difference in size, the power holding will make the deal for you. You won't break that thing.
However, if you've got the two cars next to each other, make sure the Supra is a turbo. The N/A cars came with the W58 I believe. The W55/58 are identical as far as I know.

from looking at the pic it seems they are the same length, its the shifter location that I'm looking for, as far as strength goes, I think te w58 will be ok for my project as its a '64 datsun roadster so I can only put 225 underneath it and it only weighs 2000 lbs, plenty of power thru the stock 4g63 with a 16g or T3 base turbo

In that Roadster the W series will work fine. I'm using the R154 in my 510 and it's way overkill. And an Evo III 16G will take care of any power you'll want or need in that car.
