Hydro clutch conversion on Ram 50

Post by citrus3000psi »

So, I've been a lurker for awhile, and have undertaken the normal Eclipse fwd to D50 2.0

I've seen the complaints about the cable clutch so I started my conversion to hydro...Heres some pics... I used all parts from my 1g eclipse.

This is the whole clutch box assembly mounted. (You can see the alum spacer I made)

The clutch pedal, that was drilled out and rewelded onto the the eclipse rod.

This is bracket, that I cut off the eclipse brake/clutch assembly and welded it on the D50 assmebly.

Another..

So some things I still need to do, cut trim down the backet on the firewall so it looks nicer. Weld it in, paint it up... On the side, the thing seems damn strong.... I'm not sure if I'm going to even build the support braket. I mean that plate isn't even welded in yet and I can't make it budge. However, I'm not pusing against the slave cylinder yet, so I might just for reliability.

If I could do it over, I would move the clutch box thing closer to the brake. As it sat it hits the gas pedal, so I had to bend it to make it clear...

Great idea. The only problem that may arise is clearing the intake manifold. Are you planning to move the engine foward at all?

No, If my measurements are correct (Your making me question myself now) then it should fit no problems. I'm cutting the flange off the stock 1g manifold and flipping it around. This moves the intake much farther away from the firewall. As opposted to plating off the inlet and rewelding a new inlet in.

You should be ok, that will afford you much more room than simply capping off the hole.

I've finished the entire setup, and I did run into a few snags. I did no research on slave cylinders prior to mounting up my eclipise MC. The eclipse has a 5/8 bore so finding a pull style slave should be simple. I was wrong, I could only find pull styles in a 7/8 bore. My calcluations came out to be like .66" of travel. Which isn't nearly enough movement. So I opted to get a different master cylinder. I'm running a willwood single outlet now (7/8 bore). I'm going to be cutting much closer in terms of fitment (I might have to shave a little off the intake.)

I also have the slave cylinder mounted up. It really couldn't have been any eaiser to mount it. I have pictures taken but need to get my cable from work to download them. I will post them up tomorrow.

Pressure is a little stiffer then I prefer. I've had a 2200lb 6 puck act clutch before in an integra and this truck is easiser to push. However the truck now has a oem eclipse clutch. So if I do upgrade it might be much more difficult to push. If and when I do, do this I might need to swap in a different master like a 3/4". But for now it will work with my engine break in period.

From my experience running this setup you need the clutch slave to not be side loaded at any point in it's travel as it will evetualy caues the o-ring to bind and fail. Meaning you will lose clutch function and have to pull the slave apart and repair it. But you might have figured that out already.
