Wiring

Now Available: Wiring Services

Over the last year I've become very familiar with DSM and Starion electrics.  Since wiring is beyond what most people are comfortable with, I'm offering a service to make the DSM engine harness plug into the Starion chassis harness.  You will keep all the gauges as well as the Starion alarm, and ETACS among other things.  Here is a picture of my second harness with extra wires stripped out, plugs moved, wires extended.  A really clean job.  It started as a harness from a fire damaged Eclipse AWD Automatic (lots of extra wires).

Last year was my first wiring experience.  There was ALOT of cussing, but what I learned was worth every bit of it.  I now feel comfortable tackling most wiring problems.  Not that I know it all, but I am comfortable enough to trace it out and compare it to diagrams.  If I can learn it anybody can.  I hope you can make sense of this section.  There is allot of information that is buried so click around.

How To Wire the 4G63 Harness to the Starion Harness

Here is a How-To for wiring the 4G63 harness to the Starion harness.  ('90 motor into '88 chassis)

Information

This information aims to have as little hacking and soldering of hard to find harnesses.  I'm also trying to keep it so that all accessories still work... at least in cars as separated from the engine harness as the Starion.  This creates an "engine only" harness to control the motor.  This method allows you to trouble shoot the new motor as if it was totally stock.

Extending & Routing Wires

There is actually very little cutting of the harness.  Only adding some extensions for sensors on the TB and some wires for the oil sensors.

This is how I placed and routed my harness.  I had to run a few wires through the MAS branch to include the oil pressure senders' wires.

There are also some wires that you need to add up to the gauge cluster for  the Tachometer, CEL and Oil light.

You also need to extend the Starion's 3 Alternator wires (1 thick (+) & 2 small wires) to the other side of the engine bay.  I ran them across the top radiator support (hidden).

The ICS wires are too short now that you put the TB on the front of the motor.  You need to make an extension.  I got 2 plugs off the DSM chassis harness and made an extension that way.  If I need to swap ICSs I don't need to dig that section of wires out of the intake.

Improving Reliability

There were some parts of the Starion wiring system that bothered me.  Mainly the fusible links.  Here is some info on making them more reliable.
